The Square is located between the medieval City Walls and the Renaissance Grimani bastion. There’s also an entrance to the oldest park in Croatia named after Queen Jelena Madijevka and 26m tall Captian’s Tower.

Five Wells Square is comfortably situated on the Zadar Peninsula, in the immediate vicinity of Kalelarga, the widest and most popular street in Zadar. It’s a perfect place to visit because you’re just a short walk away from other popular monuments such as the Church of St. Donatus, Cathedral of St. Anastasia, People’s Square, Greeting to the Sun, and Sea Organ.

History of Five Wells
1574, the year the Square was built, was the year of was the time of the Ottoman Empire's siege of Zadar. The Venetians helped the city resist the siege by building a large water cistern with five wells. Also, the remains of the aqueduct that brought water from Lake Vrana have also been preserved.
When the danger passed, defense bastions were built and hence the present appearance of the park.
The pentagonal Captain’s tower that leans against the City Walls is also of great importance. Just like the wells, it was built by the Venetians to strengthen the city against Turkish attacks.
